Better Off.

“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” John 16:7

With the constant push these days, even in the comments I quoted late last week, to imitate Christ, it got me to thinking… There is so great an emphasis on being like Him, that I think we often miss the beauty that we are WITH Him… That is, as believers, the Holy Spirit indwells us.

It does not often occur to us that we are, in fact, better off than the disciples were. And yet, that is what Jesus says – it is better for them that He leave, that we might have the Holy Spirit in us. Better to have God living in you, than to be walking with Him in a limited physical body.

Maybe it does not seem better, because we have so little power of experience of the Spirit in our lives. And yet, look at what Ephesians says that power looks like: “What is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 1:19,20

The power that is towards us is the same power that God used to raise Christ and seat Him on His throne! But, how we deny it! By our independent living. By our lack of real praying. By our delighting in everything but God. By not asking, so we are not receiving.

Tozer, has this to say:

“Dr. A. B. Simpson had an illustration, which I think was about as good as I ever heard. He said to be filled with the fullness of God was like a bottle in the ocean. You take the cork out of the bottle and sink it into the ocean; you got the bottle full of ocean, the bottle is in the ocean, the ocean is in the bottle, the ocean contains the bottle, the bottle contains a little bit of theocean and so it was with the Christian. We are filled under the fullness of God, but of course, we cannot contain all of God because God contains us.” Mystery of the Holy Spirit, pg 56

I want that. That fullness. That fullness that can come, because Christ is reigning, and He has sent the Comforter, the Helper, the Spirit of Truth….
